Cindy Crawford Says Ex-Husband Richard Gere Is ‘Like a Stranger’ to Her

Twenty years after calling it quits with Richard Gere, Cindy Crawford is setting the record straight on why their marriage didn’t work.

The supermodel was just 26 when she tied the knot with a 42-year-old Richard Gere in 1991. “I think part of the problem in our relationship was that we were a lot of other things, but I don’t know if we were ever friends — like peers, because I was young, and he was Richard Gere,” she explained while being interviewed for Marc Maron’s WTF podcast. Crawford said that while she didn’t consider herself to be young at the time, in hindsight, age definitely played a role in their 1995 split. “I started kind of growing up and growing into myself,” she explained. “It’s hard to change the dynamic of a relationship once you’re already in it.”

In 1998, the actress and activist remarried businessman Rande Gerber and credits their friendship with being the key to their marital success. But how would the 49-year-old beauty describe her relationship with Richard Gere today?
