When it comes to sneakers, it's hard to find that winning combination of a shoe that's both functional and fashionable, but, judging from the feet of celebrities including Beyonce and Kate Bosworth, Isabel Marant's line seems to be the perfect fit.
The Parisian designer — known for her mostly minimalist, bohemian chic creations — has produced a coveted line of funky, high-top wedge sneakers that have become a must-have for Hollywood fashionistas. The kicky collection comes in an array of colors, from explosive bright hues to basic black, and they have Velcro fasteners, so you can feel like a kid — albeit a very stylish one — again.
It seems that celebrity moms are especially big fans of the shoes. Model Miranda Kerr is often seen wearing the sneakers while out and about with her son, Flynn. (Sometimes she coordinates their footwear with the same color scheme.) While hitting the New York City streets with baby Blue Ivy, Beyonce often has a special spring in her step thanks to the shoes, which she has in black. And on the sidelines at a Knicks game earlier in the season, Alicia Keys had on a colorful pair for her night out with husband Swizz Beatz and son Egypt.
The non-moms are equally as taken with the trend. Kate Bosworth was recently spotted in Beverly Hills wearing a flowy mint green skirt that she styled down with a gray sweatshirt and the quirky kicks.
Other fans? Ginnifer Goodwin, Anne Hathaway, Dakota Fanning, Marion Cotillard, Julianne Moore, and Gisele Bundchen.
Perhaps because celebrities have been showing the line so much love lately, the shoes are becoming increasingly difficult to come by. Priced in the $700 range — yes, $700 for sneakers! — they've been selling out almost immediately on clothing site Net-A-Porter and are going for upwards of $1000 on eBay. Penelope Cruz, who has said she lives in her black ones, recently made a plea to Marant in an interview with Harper's Bazaar, saying: "They are sold out everywhere! Tell her to make more!"
According to the designer, when she creates her fashions, "the most important thing is more about the attitude and having a kind of elegance that is natural," Marant has told Elle. "People often speak about me as being the representative of the French girl on the street. It's true that my aim was to dress up everyday girls who want to feel pretty, but don't want to feel overly sexy or over-dressed — a girl who's a bit casual, cozy chic."
So what do you think: Are you a fan of the celebrity-approved sneakers — or is it a look you'd skip?
