Persistence paid off for Joel Madden.
The Good Charlotte rocker recently revealed in an interview with "60 Minutes" in Australia -- where he's a panelist on that country's version of "The Voice" -- that it wasn't easy convincing his "Fashion Star" wife Nicole Richie to go out with him. So how did he do it? He begged.
"I'm not for every woman, you know. Because a lot of women -- I mean, obviously, your first thing is, 'What do you want your guy to look like?' And I'm not the tall, dark, handsome guy," Madden said. "But I think [you like me] once you get to know me -- like how I got Nicole."
"When I first would see her around, we were friends," Madden noted of his wife of two years, who's now the mother of his two children, 4-year-old Harlow and 3-year-old Sparrow. "But I don't think I'm the obvious choice. I'm always like, 'Just give me a shot. Just give me one date.' If I can get my foot in the door…."
Eventually, Richie gave in and dated Madden for four year before the two tied the knot in December 2010 at the home of her famous pop, Lionel Richie. (Their ceremony even featured a live elephant!)
But getting her to take the plunge was just as challenging as getting her to say "yes" to a first date. In April 2012, Madden revealed on an Aussie radio show "Fifi & Jules" -- he must be huge down there! -- that he had to propose multiple times.
"People don't know this, but I asked her to marry me 10 times before she actually said yes. I was asking every other Tuesday," he joked.
After all the time it supposedly took to bring them together, multiple reports now claim that Madden and Richie are headed to splitsville. Richie first caused speculation when she appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" sans wedding ring earlier this month.
Then, just this week, Life & Style reported an insider's comments that things were not looking good.
"They've been living separate lives for a while," the source told the mag. "Joel is never around."
Joel, you know what to do!
