So much for that hiatus. Two years after The Killers announced they were going to take a much-needed break, the Las Vegas-based band is preparing to release its fourth album, Battle Born, on September 18. And on Thursday, they debuted the video for its first single, "Runaways," an anthemic song which seems to describe the history of frontman Brandon Flowers' relationship with his wife. Although the song is classic Killers, the video is pretty basic: The band performs against a black background, which intermittently flashes the Sin City skyline and a highway, both of which are depicted on Battle Born's cover.
''I had a good feeling about it," Flowers tells Billboard.com of "Runaways." "When I heard that march that catapults the song forward, I knew there was something special about it." And he's not the only one who feels that way about the track. After it leaked online, it had to be released a week early on July 11 in order to keep up with the demand from radio stations eager to spin it.
Battle Born took more than a year for The Killers to write, record, and produce in their very own Las Vegas studio — and they had lots of help. Five producers were brought in to finesse the tracks, including U2's go-to guy Steve Lillywhite and three men who worked on Flower's 2010 solo album Flamingo: Brendan O'Brien, Stuart Price, and Daniel Lanois.
The Killers will perform on "Late Show With David Letterman," "The Colbert Report," and "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" before setting off on a European tour August 10.
