Zooey Deschanel and her adorkable character on the Fox sitcom “New Girl” have one thing in common: They’re practical individuals. Since hitting TV screens three seasons ago as loveable-but-quirky Jess, Deschanel has quickly warped into an indie darling and developed a cult-like following of fans. But, the 33-year-old actress reveals in a new interview with InStyle magazine that she wasn’t always the most popular girl at the party.
“There were people who were fully participating in high school. Not me. I felt a little bit isolated, like I was observing,” she shares in the April issue of the magazine. “I was a very cautious person. I always think my natural state is to feel like an outsider, and I don’t quite relate to anybody.”
Her days as an awkward teenager are definitely over. In addition to her enviable acting career, she’s also cemented her status as a singer-songwriter with her band, “She and Him,” with ex-husband Ben Gibbard, whom she still works with despite their 2012 divorce. “I used to be easily scared; I’m much more fearless now.”
Despite her successes, the doe-eyed brunette is still surprised by how much people pay attention to her. “People are more affected by how I look and dress myself than I think anyone would care to admit,” the Los Angeles-bred lady dishes. “I guess I’ll just have to start wearing power suits.”
We doubt she’ll be trading her ladylike frocks for a power suit anytime soon, especially since her personal style has been years in the making. Before she was raking in upwards of $95,000 per month on her hit TV show, she was like every other kid with a small piggy bank. “I didn’t have a lot of money, so I got things for, like $2, $3, and made myself look as good as I could.” Her budget constrictions actually helped her develop her fashion chops. “Limitations make you more creative,” she says.
And though she now has the means and access to any designer in the world, she’s quick to downplay the notion of paying top dollar just to crack the best-dressed lists. “Style isn’t when you buy yourself the most expensive things. It’s being creative and able to put together what you’ve collected.”
