Taylor Swift has some really good karma coming her way.
The singer has topped DoSomething.org's annual list of the most charitable celebs since 2012, thanks to her generous donations to worthy causes, her visits and at least one call to hospitals, and her performances at benefit concerts. Now, Billboard confirms that she's donated another $15,000 to a GoFundMe campaign to benefit Amber Lynn and Jonathan "Bear" Van Riper, a 28-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son who were injured in a car crash Saturday in Huntsville, Texas, outside of Houston.
Aaron Van Riper, a volunteer firefighter in the town, arrived at the scene of the wreck to help, not knowing the victims were his wife and son. The two were flown to a Houston hospital for treatment, and before they could even be released, a family friend started a fundraising campaign. Local news station FOX 26 reported Wednesday that the mother remained in critical condition, with a broken pelvis, leg, and foot. Her son has been released from the hospital with a broken leg and elbow.
"Both have multiple broken bones," wrote a GoFundMe poster who identified herself as a longtime family friend named Mandy Kibby. "This is an outstanding family! They are involved with supporting our local community of Riverside and Fire Stations. Please help this precious family due to excessive medical bills and lack of funds that will come in over the next year. Amber and Bear will both be in wheelchairs leaving Aaron to take care of his family 24/7 in a house full of stairs."
Swift's gift is the largest of the more than $94,000 donated as of late Thursday. Organizers are seeking a total of $125,000 for the family.
It's typical of Swift to do something like this. Just a few of the organizations that have received considerable donations from the "Bad Blood" crooner in the last couple of years are New York City public schools ($50,000 from sales of her song "Welcome to New York"); the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Cancer Center ($50,000); and the Nashville Symphony ($100,00 for her 24th birthday).
But Swift, 25, has been known to do more than write checks. She's also shown up in hospital wings and even on the doorsteps of her fans. In other words, the Van Ripers and hospital patients everywhere should be on the lookout for a cheerful blonde with a sweet voice and a big smile.
