Lily Collins is more than just a pretty face, and the offspring of rock royalty, and one of Hollywood's hottest young stars: She's also (gasp!) a hard-working professional with her wits about her. Despite the odds, the "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" actress has managed to navigate Tinseltown with grace, landing coveted roles not because of her famous last name, but because of her incredible drive.
It's hard to think of Collins without making comparisons to another fresh-faced beauty whose career launched from a young adult fantasy franchise — that's right, good ol' Jennifer Lawrence. So what does Collins think of this contemporary (ie: this competition)? In short, she's a big fan.
"She's a friend; she's awesome," Collins, 24, tells Glamour. "The choices Jennifer has made have been really interesting. And I loved how she carried herself after her trip [going up onstage] at the Oscars. I was like, 'You go, girl!'"
Between shooting films and cheering on her Oscar-winning friends, Collins finds time to shop in Paris and have serendipitous chats with Karl Lagerfeld.
"We'd met briefly before," she explains. "And I was shopping at Colette when he just walked in and said, 'Ah, Lily!' Karl Lagerfeld in Paris. Epic."
And while she seems to be managing just find on her own, of course people assume her famous father, music legend Phil Collins, sprinkled some fairy dust near the movie studios to help start his daughter's career. And all of these people are wrong.
"I always wanted to do it on my own," Collins reveals. "I never wanted anyone making phone calls."
Sure, but that last name has to mean something, right? Of course it does, and while this fact isn't lost on Collins, she also realizes her genes can only get her so far.
"A name can open doors," she admits. "But there's a quote I like: 'Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open.'"
In other words, she's not going to sit here and pretend no one cared that her dad happens to be one of the world's most famous musicians, but she can to take it from there, thank you very much. With the "City of Bones" release right around the corner, her father must be pretty proud.
