From the outside, Justin Bieber's life seems to be on the skids given his most recent dramas, which include a spit spat with a neighbor, crazy house parties at his mansion, and that whole monkey debacle. But the 19-year-old insists he knows exactly what he's doing.
"I know who I am, and I'm very much in control," the "Boyfriend" singer said in a new interview with Teen Vogue. "I don't need to address every speculation. Remember when Cam'ron dissed Jay-Z? Jay-Z didn't even respond. Why didn't he respond? He didn't need to respond because he's Jay-Z."
However, Bieber admits that all of the negative press has caused him to withdraw, only trusting just his close circle of friends and confidantes now.
"I get good vibes from people all the time, and I probably could get along with them and be their friend, but now I just don't trust anybody," he said. "Literally, my phone never rings. I only have, like, four people that I keep in contact with. I don't need a bunch of friends to make me happy. I just need the people close to me that I love, that's all."
And who is on that short list?
"My dad, my mom, Ryan [Good]. Ryan and Chaz [his friends from home]. [Lil] Twist is my best friend," he says, referring to the rapper who has hosted wild house parties at Bieber's mansion while he's been on tour and is often tooling around Los Angeles in the megastar's pricey cars. "They don't see me as Justin Bieber, but just see me as Justin."
While The Biebs is a big force in social media – and just reached 37 million followers on Twitter – he admits he sometimes finds it a frustrating experience.
"I see so much stuff on the Internet, sometimes I just want to go to Twitter and just go after people," he said. "But then I just think twice: If someone is dissing me, I'm going to make this person way more famous by tweeting them."
However, his Twitter followers get a thumbs up. YouTubers? Not so much.
"My Twitter is really nice. I have so many fans that I rarely ever see a nasty tweet," he said. "I don't read YouTube comments because those can get you sad."
Despite the noise in his life, Bieber just tries to focus on touring and making music for his fans.
"When people get to where they want, they're like, 'I'm here, I got it,'" he said of his famous peers. "When I get to the top, I just want to get better."
