30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto may be a world famous actor and musician, but the artist didn't always have such a bright future.
"I didn't know I was going to be an actor," Leto, 41, reveals in a "Letter To My Younger Self," for Britain’s The Big Issue. "I thought I might be an artist or a painter. Or maybe a drug dealer."
In the interview, Leto says that his younger days were spent acting out against all types of authority. "I was at a crossroads in life when I was 16," he admits. "If I met the teenage Jared now the first thing I'd notice would probably be that my wallet was missing. He had a pretty tough exterior, it would be hard to crack," he says, adding, "I was in trouble quite a bit with the authorities, any person who made rules or the law."
In fact, the actor, who came to fame playing hunky and misunderstood Jordan Catalano on
"My So Called Life" alongside Claire Danes, admits he didn't just consider selling drugs, he also did a lot them himself.
"I dropped out of school. My adolescence was actually a very turbulent time for me. I think we're all dealt a set of challenges in our lives and we all deal with them in different way. When you're younger you don't have the tools, you just don't know how to cope with those challenges. Probably a lot of my behavior was related to doing drugs."
But, the rocker, who is currently on a world tour with his band, says it is those tough times that got him to where he is today.
"I think everything happens for a reason so it's good that I learned the lessons that I had to learn. But there was a lot of pain and uncertainty and that's not always fun."
Leto even has an inspiring message for his former self: "It's ok to dream as big as you can dream. I'd tell him to hang on tight, and listen, and to bet on himself."
And though times were tough for him, the actor who'll next star alongside Matthew McConaughey in "Dallas Buyers Club," out later this year, says he'd like to go back in time "just for a day."
"You'd have no contribution to make except just to have a good time, jump in a swimming pool, and eat bad food. It might be nice to have that feeling again."
