Chelsea Handler has earned the moniker of "reigning queen of late night" thanks to her frank comedy on her E! talk show, "Chelsea Lately," boredom with Hollywood conventions, and a roster of A-list friends.
But what happens when you tap her to emcee an evening about women forging together to fight cancer? Allow us to tell you.
The Entertainment Industry Foundation hosts an annual gala for the Women's Cancer Research Fund by the name of "An Unforgettable Evening," and that's not all smoke -- the gala is run by powerful women including Tom Hanks's wife, Rita Wilson, and Steven Spielberg's other half, Kate Capshaw.
It's mercifully brief as far as showbiz fundraisers go, and pridefully so. This year's ceremony honored designer Carolina Herrera and cancer survivor and pop star Kylie Minogue on Thursday in Los Angeles. It also featured a performance from Bruno Mars.
But would Handler's brand of comedy play to a crowd of doctors with deep pockets and industry vets with alarm clocks on the brain?
In a word: totally. Here's what happened what Chelsea hosted a cancer benefit ...
She made fun of herself. "Initially, I hesitated hosting an evening about cancer because I'm such a Pisces," she deadpanned.
"I'd like to thank everyone for coming, even the people I make fun of ... if you don't know me it means you don't watch E!, you've never read a book, and you don't give a s--t about 'Keeping up with the Kardashians,'" she added.
She made fun of the boys. "Tonight is dedicated solely to raising money to research women's cancer, so if you're a man with cancer, I don't know what to tell you. Just pack up your one ball and exit."
It went over big with the crowd, including "Friends" alum Lisa Kudrow, Angie Harmon, and Julianne Hough.
"And Lance Armstrong, if you're here, just exit all together. Everyone hates you," she said.
She made fun of the people who hired her. "This isn't the Oscars, let's go!" Handler barked at Wilson and Capshaw as they weaved through banquet tables at the Beverly Wilshire's grand ballroom to make their way to the stage to introduce the honorees.
She obviously made fun of Ryan Seacrest. In the grand tradition of the E! personalities that grab a cult following, she took down network cash cow Seacrest.
"The sexy, sexy, sexy Bruno Mars is here," she said, vamping for the singer, "and he's the new hardest working man in show business. Take that, Ryan Seacrest."
