Highlights from the Academy Awards don't have to come exclusively from the telecast.

While we'll always have the images of Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum twirling on the Oscar stage, and the charming tumble Jennifer Lawrence took on her way up to the podium, here are five things that stayed with us from pre-Oscar bashes and into-the-night afterparties.

Jessica Chastain went public with her man. The actress may be ubiquitous on screen but details about her personal life are scarce. Making the awards-season rounds for her drama "Zero Dark Thirty," the 35-year-old was revealed to be dating Italian-born fashion executive Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo. The pair made their formal debut at non-profit Women In Film's annual pre-party, and handled the industry crowd with ease.

Anne Hathaway has a sense of humor. Or something. Praised for her heartbreaking turn in "Les Misérables," but panned for an air of preciousness in campaigning for Oscar, Anne Hathaway was brought back to Earth a bit, courtesy of co-star Russell Crowe. Prior to Sunday's show, Hathaway accepted an award from the Costume Designer's Guild. Crowe presented her with the honor and joked "she found out they actually require you to wear underpants when they go out at night," referring to a wardrobe malfunction earlier in the year. Hathaway took it in stride and said she was wondering when Crowe was going to go there.

Chris Brown's social stock is on the rise: While paparazzi car chases, confrontations with Frank Ocean, and his long troubled history with Rihanna keep Chris Brown controversial, never underestimate the power of a party. Hollywood and music types were more than happy to chat up Brown at Elton John's annual viewing party in West Hollywood, California. He was well received by host Elton and folks like Nicki Minaj, Kelly Osbourne, Randy Jackson, and Steven Tyler.

Will Smith's sons will shortly steal empire: The action star and musician has seen many an Oscar week, but perhaps not from the vantage point he enjoyed this year: plus one. The 44-year-old stepped out to support his 20-year-old son Trey, aka DJ AcE, at a Vanity Fair celebration in Hollywood. His younger son, 14-year-old Jayden, also appeared with a dance troupe to throw down some moves for the crowd.

Diamonds are still a girl's best friend: Though Julianne Moore wasn't nominated for an Oscar (though she swept Emmys and Globes for "Game Change"), the week saw another prize for the redhead – she was lucky to rock the Bulgari engagement setting emerald and diamond bib necklace that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. The jeweler acquired the piece from the late actress' estate, and held a swanky dinner to mark its legacy.
