Chelsea Handler ‘Warned to Lay Off’ Matt Lauer After Ann Curry ‘S**t’ Joke: Report

Not everyone finds bathroom humor funny.

Chelsea Handler, who’s known for her crass one-liners, reportedly got a dressing down by her bosses after she dumped on the “Today” show’s Matt Lauer and his reported involvement in the firing of his morning co-host Ann Curry.

When discussing Al Roker’s recent admission that he once “pooped his pants” during a press event at the White House on her E! show “Chelsea Lately,” Handler snarked, “This isn’t the first time a ‘Today’ show cast member was in the news about this sensitive subject. For years it was common knowledge that Matt Lauer spent every morning [s***ting] all over Ann Curry.”

We certainly laughed, but Lauer and the suits at Comcast – who own both NBC and E! – didn’t see the humor in the comment and the comedian and her show’s writers “were warned to lay off Matt,” reports the New York Post. “They don’t want them making more fun of Matt and the Ann Curry situation right now.”

Although Handler’s rep, Stephen Huvane, tells omg! that the report “is not true,” the topic of Lauer and Curry has been a sensitive one ever since the beloved news anchor was replaced by Savannah Guthrie in June. Fans of the morning talk show were not only outraged over the way it went down (she was blindsided and cried on air while saying goodbye), but “Today’s” ratings have really gone down the toilet, so to speak, ever since.

Roker himself added to the dog pile in August when he, Lauer, and Guthrie were interviewing the U.S. women’s Olympic rowing team after the London games and Lauer mentioned their tradition of throwing a teammate in the water. Since the ladies were in New York City, he joked that their tradition should be that “you throw her in the Hudson River." But the best laugh certainly came courtesy of Roker, who interjected that the women’s tradition “is different than our tradition, which is you throw one of us under the bus, but that’s another story." As the Olympians chuckled awkwardly, both Lauer and Guthrie said through their teeth, “Mr. Roker…”
