Just three weeks ago, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) was an illness few of us knew much about. Now, however, it seems that everyone, from your best friend to your favorite Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, is taking on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
In case you've somehow been under a rock (or away from your computer and smartphone and all other forms of modern communication), the campaign encourages participants to dump buckets of ice water over their heads, donate some cold, hard cash to the cause, and then challenge others to do the same. The fundraising effort has caught on like wildfire, and, as of Wednesday, the ALS Association reported a whopping $31.5 million in donations.
But the Ice Bucket Challenge hasn't just taught us about ALS. Thanks to some revealing videos of celebrities supporting the cause, we've learned many other (off-topic) facts. To keep you in the know, we've rounded up our favorite 11 discoveries.
1. Hayden Panettiere will confirm her pregnancy for a good cause.
Though her bump has been on display for months, the Nashville star still hadn't publicly confirmed that she was expecting. But that all changed when she called out her "unborn child" in her video.
2. Consciously uncoupling can be ice cold.
Talk about Coldplay! Just because they're separated didn't keep Gwyneth Paltrow from challenging her soon-to-be ex-husband, Chris Martin.
3. Chris Pratt can pound a Smirnoff Ice.
The Guardians of the Galaxy star showed off his drinking skills, only to be drenched from above by his wife, Anna Faris.
4. Emma Stone calls her boyfriend "Andrew Gar-field of Dreams."
After getting doused, the Spider-Man actress nominated her co-star/boyfriend "Andrew Gar-field of Dreams" to do the challenge next.
5. John Krasinski is NO HELP with the groceries.
After his wife, Emily Blunt, unloaded a giant vat of ice water on his head, the funnyman returned the, uh, "favor" while she was carrying groceries out from her car.
6. Charlie Sheen may be — well, Charlie Sheen — but he's really generous.
This star didn't fill his bucket with ice water. He filled it with dollars... 10,000 of them (or so he said), all to go to the ALS Association.
7. Robert Pattinson doesn't have a bucket (not that we're complaining).
Thankfully, the 28-year-old heartthrob has friends, and they have ice cubes. And a hose. And red Solo cups. And more ice.
8. Simon Cowell gets the giggles.
Sometimes, the X Factor judge laughs. And laughs. And laughs.
9. Liam Hemsworth owns a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles onesie.
Oh, how we wish this were the District 13 uniforms for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.
10. Arabella Kushner might be the most clever Trump yet.
Just watch how Ivanka Trump's daughter handled this challenge. Genius.
11. Mark Wahlberg's family sticks together through thick and freezing.
The Transformers star did his dumping alongside his wife, Rhea Wahlberg, and their three oldest kids, Ella, Michael, and Brendan, and they each nominated three people. The former Marky Mark gets bonus points for ripping off his shirt immediately after getting soaked.
