After more than two decades on the wagon, Bruce Willis has hopped back off.
The 57-year-old actor reveals in the March issue of GQ that after going sober in 1988, he decided to allow himself to drink again … but not to the degree he drank before.
“Once I realized that I wasn't gonna run myself off the pier of life with alcohol, drinking vodka out of the bottle every day ... I have wine now, mostly when I eat,” Willis, a father of four daughters from the age of 10 months to 24-years-old, tells the magazine.
After skyrocketing to fame with “Moonlighting,” the actor scored a very lucrative deal – especially for that time – of a reported $5-$7 million to promote Seagram’s wine coolers in 1986. The result was a super-cheesy (after all, it was the ‘80s!) commercial where Willis performs a song about his love of wine coolers … even using one as a microphone.
Soon after, he was arrested for a DUI, and then in 1987 he was charged with assaulting a police officer who was breaking up a party at his home, thus ending his relationship with the alcohol company. Conflicting reports from that time claimed Willis either quit or was fired.
These days, of course, Willis is much more mild-mannered as he settles into married life with his second wife, Emma, and their young daughter, Mabel. He’s also thinking about the end of his career.
“The work that I do … If you know you only have a certain amount of time left, what would be the best thing you could possibly do with that time?” he tells GQ. “It's a great job to have the task of trying to entertain people. But if you've read any of the Marlon Brando stuff, you know it's no job for a grown man.”
So, does that mean he will retire?
“Well, I have to stop doing it at some point, and I would like to do it with the same grace that he did,” he continues. “Who's another actor who continued to work? Eastwood is still doing it. And he's still doing great, telling stories. Telling stories is a way to make money.”
