While Justin Bieber didn’t have a Twitter tantrum and tweet “worst parody,” he was not a fan of Ashley Benson and her maybe-boyfriend, James Franco, spoofing his “Boyfriend” video.
Benson tells Seventeen the video – which caused a stir when it hit the Web in January and featured Franco doing an amusing Bieber impression and Benson, in a dark wig, channeling what appeared to be Selena Gomez – was misinterpreted.
“People thought that I was being mean, but I was just doing what the girl did in the video. It wasn’t a jab at [Selena],” says the “Pretty Little Liars” star, who co-stars with Gomez in “Spring Breakers,” which hits theaters March 29.
While Gomez didn’t seem to take offense – the gals are tight after filming the racy college flick – Bieber definitely did.
“I heard from Justin. He wasn’t happy. Justin is like my little brother since he and my ex are so close,” says the 23-year-old California native, referring to "Punk’d" producer Ryan Good. “Anytime you go through a breakup, the friends get defensive. But all is well in that area now.”
Benson recently wrapped a European tour to promote “Spring Breakers” with Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens. She talked about their bonding experience on the set, where they spent every minute together – including sharing a trailer!
“Selena, Vanessa, and I all came from a Disney background, and this was different from anything we’ve done,” says Benson, who has portrayed Hanna Marin on ABC Family’s “PLL” since 2010. “But we wanted to prove that we’re not just girls who play happy parts. It was such a crazy experience – I’m so proud of all of us. I’m really excited for everybody to see it.”
And there will be a lot to see in the flick. Not only did Benson film a raunchy threesome scene with Hudgens and her partner-in-parody Franco, but her wardrobe consisted mostly of bikinis.
“I was in a bathing suit every single day,” she says of filming the movie. “It definitely made me more confident. We [later] had to do a bathing suit scene for ‘PLL.’ The girls were like, ‘Oh my god, I don’t want to be in a bathing suit on screen!’ and I was like, ‘Whatever. Come on, throw it on me.’ It is what it is! People will make mean comments. People are going to say that you’re fat, that you’re this, that you’re that. You just have to be comfortable in your own skin.”
Benson is not only comfortable in her own skin, but confident about her talent and ambitious about her future in Hollywood. Very ambitious.
“I love Michelle Williams and Natalie Portman – those are the careers I want,” she says. “My goal is to win an Oscar, and I’m going to take the steps to get there.”
