Geena Davis just gets better with age.

The 56-year-old actress turned heads on the red carpet at the Princess Grace Foundation Awards gala in Manhattan on Monday night. Davis wore a shimmery gold gown that exposed one shoulder and hugged her curves for the posh affair. Her long, wavy auburn hair was down, and her flawless porcelain skin glowed.

It's hard to believe that it was over 20 years ago that we watched Davis and her "Thelma & Louise" co-star Susan Sarandon, 66, speed off in a Thunderbird convertible — and into movie history. Both women have aged so gracefully.

Late last month Davis, who in 2004 founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to change the way females are portrayed in feature films, talked about the impact that role had on her career. "'Thelma & Louise' effectively changed the course of my life," she said at the Women's Foundation of Colorado luncheon. "It has driven my commitment to empower women. ... [Over the years, women have approached me to share] the impact the movie had made in their lives. How it made them feel empowered. That brought home to me in a big way how few opportunities we have to feel strongly about characters like this in movies."

Davis has been married to Iranian-American neurosurgeon Reza Jarrahy, who is 15 years her junior, since 2001, and they have three children — a daughter Alizeh, 10, and twin sons Kian and Kaiis, 8. The Academy Award-winning actress has said that becoming a mother in her 40s has been to her advantage. "If I'd had kids earlier, I could easily have become one of those mothers who overinvolve themselves and try to live life through their kids," she told Good Housekeeping. "I'm sure there are younger people who have figured things out long before I did, but in my case, I became a parent with exactly the right person at exactly the right time."

At the Princess Grace Foundation Awards gala on Monday, Davis mingled with Prince Albert of Monaco and his wife Charlene. The Foundation was started in 1982 after the death of the prince's mother, Hollywood icon Grace Kelly. The event honors prominent individuals in drama, dance, and film.
