Will Beyoncé Surprise Us at the MTV Video Music Awards?

With a number of superstar acts scheduled, the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards is bound to be a memorable night – but it could get that much more exciting if Beyoncé has anything to do with it.

Rumors have been swirling that the Lemonade singer will put on a surprise performance at New York City's Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. For starters, the Los Angeles Times reported, "Beyoncé has been in top-secret rehearsals." And that's not our only reason to believe she might take the stage.

Currently on her Formation World Tour, Beyoncé – who has 11 VMA nominations – hasn't put on a scheduled show since Aug. 3, giving her ample time to get ready for tonight's performance. Plus, her next show is on Sept. 7, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, about as close to Manhattan as you can get.

The star also loves a good surprise. This year alone she's delivered unexpected – and unbelievable – performances at the Super Bowl 50 Halftime show and the 2016 B.E.T. Awards. And let's not forget about her surprise self-titled album in 2013 and this year's surprise visual album Lemonade".

The timing of her surprise albums is another strong indicator of a possible VMA performance. After the release of Beyoncé, the singer closed out the award show in 2014 with a medley from the fifth-studio album. Why not do the same with her Lemonade material?

The proof is there, people. Now we'll just have to wait and see.

The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards air live on Sunday, with a pre-show beginning at 8 p.m. ET and the big show at 9 p.m. ET.
