Arnold Schwarzenegger Has Brief Twitter Feud With Nickelback

Nickelback might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think politics these days — unless you’re Arnold Schwarzenegger. On Valentine’s Day, the Celebrity Apprentice leader took to Twitter to share some thoughts about the current state of affairs in Washington, D.C., and weirdly, he pulled the ’90s rock band into the fray.

“When Congress is less popular than herpes & Nickelback, how do 97% of them get re-elected?” he asked on the social media site. He then answered his question: “Gerrymandering,” and added a link to a video (that was supposed to be funny) in which he blasted Congress.

Naturally, Nickelback wasn’t too pleased about being grouped together with herpes, and they quickly wrote back to the former governor. “.@Schwarzenegger big fans,” they began (making sure to use the period before his handle so that everyone could see their message). “Approval rate this: Batman & Robin. Please leave us out of your future wisdom drops. Danke Shön Herr Governator.” Did anyone else sense a twinge of sarcasm in that tweet?

Schwarzenegger wrote back about an hour later, trying to shift the focus back to his political message and away from the fact that he grouped the band with herpes (among other things – which they saw if they bothered to watch his video link). “@Nickelback That’s… ice cold. I hope we can agree that we need a freeze on gerrymandering, guys. Thanks for the reply,” he shared.

This is hardly the first time Schwarzenegger has aired his political views, however. Earlier this month, he sparred with President Trump, suggesting they change jobs (after Trump said the actor had “failed” at Celebrity Apprentice).

Nickelback seemed to simmer down after that, tweeting, “@schwarzenegger well played, sir. #Respect.” It was unclear whether they’d seen the rest of the company he’d grouped them with in his video, however.

Nickelback is used to being the butt of jokes, but always seems ready to clap back at them, which the small U.K. band Royal Blood found out last year.

In his Facebook video post, Schwarzenegger unleashed on D.C. with what seemed to be a low-budget video clip. “Here are some things that are more popular than congress: Hemorrhoids, Nickelback, traffic jams, cockroaches, root canals, colonoscopies, herpes,” he began before adding, “They couldn’t even beat herpes in the polls!” He then tries to explain what gerrymandering is and how it works. According to him, it’s a system that allows politicians to “pick their voters instead of the voters picking their politicians.” While clips and quotes from his old films played, he lamented about his home state of California, saying that after more than 250 congressional elections, only one district changed party hands.

He then shifted his tone, saying that the Golden State took the power back from the politicians so the people could decide on the district lines. Using that as evidence, he argued that Californians coincidentally proved that gerrymandering “can be permanently terminated.” You see what he did there?

He went on to encourage people to share the video if they thought it was time to end gerrymandering. So far, Nickelback has not shared the video.
