'Psych: The Movie': Cary Elwes won't appear in holiday reunion
Gus (Dulé Hill) may want to update his go-to pick-up line, because we’ve learned something that’s more messed up than Pluto’s demotion.
EW has learned that Cary Elwes will not appear in Psych: The Movie. Elwes played master-thief Pierre Despereaux during the USA Network series’ original run.
“Here’s the funny thing: Cary was the one who leaked that the movie was happening while James [Roday] and I were writing,” Franks tells EW. “Yet, we couldn’t make it work with Cary of all people!”
Before the two-hour film was officially announced in May, the Princess Bride actor reportedly let slip that it was in the works at Indiana Comic Con in April, according to The Herald Bulletin. “We’re all reuniting in July to make some organized chaos,” he said at the time. Unfortunately, that ended up not happening, which Franks feels is very in-line with the spirit of his wacky, fake-psychic, detective series.
“[This] feels very Psych-like. The one person you think would be in it, he’s not in this one,” says Franks.
However, there’s a chance we could see Despereaux (or Interpol Director Royston Staley — the jury is still out on his real identity) again in the future. As EW reported Monday, Franks wants to make five more films after this one debuts in December.
After three years off the air, Psych: The Movie brings original cast members Roday, Hill, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, and Corbin Bernsen back for an adventure that pits them up against the dastardly Thin White Duke (Zachary Levi). Ralph Macchio and Kurt Fuller are set to reprise their roles as Nick Conforth and Woody the Coroner, respectively, alongside Psych newcomers Jazmyn Simon (Ballers) as Gus’ love interest and WWE wrestler Charlotte Flair as the Duke’s sidekick.
Psych: The Movie debuts in December on USA Network.
