Before the start of season seven, at least 1,243 people had died on screen during Game of Thrones. That's a lot of deaths! Some of them have been welcome-Ramsey, Joffrey-some of them have been heartbreaking-Ned Stark, Hodor, Catelyn, Robb, Rickon, all the wolves. But none of them compare to the death in the penultimate episode of the current season.

Up until tonight's episode, we knew the dragons could be injured, but we believed them to be immortal. Dragons were the ultimate weapon-Daenerys's key to victory and the ultimate tool to defeat evil. With Jon Snow and his small team facing certain death, Dany teleported north with her three dragons and swooped in to save the day. She wiped out the White Walkers' wights, but somehow, those evil blue beings knew exactly how to deal with a dragon. A White Walker pulled out an ice spear and hurled it at one of Dany's dragons (we don't know exactly which one yet, so let's at least assume it was the worst one). And down it went in one shot-not at all in the slow poisonous way we had predicted.

This is the hardest death on Game of Thrones for a number of reasons. Now, we know the real White Walker threat. They can kill a dragon like it's no big deal. It's also a symbolic death. Dragons are vulnerable. Like the cutting down of Ned in season one, now we know that no man, woman, or beast is safe on Thrones. But, the real reason it's the worst is that final scene, where the dragon is converted into some sort of horrific White Walker zombie dragon. It's a twist that some Thrones fans have been worried about for years now.

And just like that, the White Walkers are even more unstoppable. Westeros is screwed.

But at least they captured that one wight, right?
