In her latest role, actress Katie Holmes provides a reminder of why she and Tom Cruise are now exes, rather than husband and wife.

Holmes, 36, stars in the upcoming independent drama Touched With Fire as a woman struggling with bipolar disorder, who meets a romantic interest in a psychiatric hospital. The actress revealed to Yahoo Movies that it truly affected her.

“I came to understand the pain that is involved,” Holmes said of the mental illness depicted in the film. “It really is a hardship. I walked away from the picture with a great amount of empathy."

She added that the movie "means a lot” to her. “I’m really proud of this,” the mother of Cruise’s daughter, 9-year-old Suri, added.

Her words came a decade after her former spouse sat down for a much discussed interview with Today’s Matt Lauer that turned into a rant. In it, Cruise infamously derided model and actress Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants while struggling with postpartum depression, an experience she publicly discussed in the hopes of helping others.

While people remember the moment Cruise said to Lauer, “Matt, you’re glib…,”
the A-Lister’s main message was that he didn’t believe in psychiatry or psychology, partly because of his status as a Scientologist.

“I’ve never agreed with psychiatry, ever,” Cruise explained to Lauer. “Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry. And when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn’t believe in psychology. And as far as the Brooke Shields thing is, look. You gotta understand, I really care about Brooke Shields. I think here’s a wonderful and talented woman. And I wanna see her do well. And I know that… psychiatry is… is a pseudo science."

Cruise, now 53, and Holmes were newly engaged after only a few months of dating at the time of his June 2005 interview. After marrying in November 2006, she became a Scientologist, too.

However, she reportedly surprised him — and not in a good way — when she filed for divorce in 2012. He confirmed in a September 2013 deposition that what many had speculated was true: Holmes left, in part, because of Scientology, which she no longer practices. When one of the attorneys on the opposing side in a civil lawsuit asked if Holmes left, in part, "to protect Suri from Scientology,” he was clear in his answer.

“Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes,” Cruise testified.

Just as Holmes promotes her latest project, which arrives in select theaters on Feb. 12, her relationship with Cruise is back in the news. Actress Leah Remini has released a memoir, Troublemaker, about her experiences with the controversial belief system detailing the behind-the-scenes drama of the lavish TomKat wedding and the church’s exceedingly close relationship with Cruise.

On Wednesday, Remini appeared on Watch What Happens Live and dispelled the notion that Cruise is seen with Suri infrequently because she’s not a Scientologist. (Suri primarily lives with Holmes.) Remini explained that Suri is a “baby” and therefore has not been deemed a “suppressive person” or one with whom Scientologists cannot be connected. Holmes doesn’t get such a pass.

Let’s just say Cruise won’t be buying a ticket to her new movie.
