Allison Williams on Her White Privilege and Trying to Level the Playing Field
In a new interview with MarieClaire.com, actress Allison Williams opens up about owning her white privilege. She said, “Trying to imagine what it’s like to be someone else is never a substitute for actually living that way. … [I] have spent the majority of my adult life trying to level the playing field to reduce … inherent inequities.”
Williams stars in the horror film Get Out, which tackles the reality of racism. In Get Out, her character is dating a black man and is aware of the racial prejudices a black man faces in America, although her family and her hometown may not be.
Actor Bradley Whitford, who also stars in the movie, said the film’s goal is to give viewers a new way of looking at “white liberal racism.” Director Jordan Peele, best known as a comedian, made the film hoping “to generate conversation about topics that are often pushed under the rug.”
Williams added, “Maybe race can be best thrust into conversation from a genre that feels very unfamiliar … showing Get Out to a room full of strangers and having them react lets them be introspective and see the way certain images affect other people.” And in terms of this movie coming out during the Trump era, Williams thinks that it might be “perfect timing,” adding that “everyone is very on edge right now, everyone is feeling a little bit raw.”
