Alanis Morissette and Other Celebrities Who Got Scammed Out of Millions

Mo’ money, mo’ problems. Celebrities earn millions and millions, so unfortunately, it’s common for them to be targets of huge money scams.

Singer Alanis Morissette is the latest victim, as her ex-manager admitted to stealing money earlier this week. According to the Associated Press, Jonathan Todd Schwartz was charged on Wednesday for embezzling $4.8 million from the musician.

Yahoo Celebrity put together a list of stars who’ve been ripped off by their managers or financial advisers.

  1. Sting. The artist lost almost $10 million to his financial adviser. The betrayal lasted over 15 years before finally Sting noticed the missing money.

  2. Uma Thurman. New York accountant Kenneth Starr stole $1 million from the actress. She fought to get her money back and won.

  3. Rihanna. The Barbados native sued her accountant at Berdon LLP for mismanaging her money. She claimed she lost almost $9 million in one year. The two parties settled out of court, and the pop star was awarded $10 million.

  4. NSync and the Backstreet Boys. The late music producer Lou Pearlman managed the boy bands in the ’90s. Despite his success, Pearlman stole more than $300 million from his clients. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

  5. Billy Joel. The piano man’s former brother-in-law and manager scammed him of $90 million. Joel got only $8 million back after the court ordeal was over.
