Happy birthday, Adam Sandler! The Billy Madison and Do-Over star turns 50 on Sept. 9. In honor of his half century of generating laughs in projects like The Wedding Singer, Saturday Night Live, and Grown Ups, here are five SNL sketches that helped launch his career.

“Hanukkah Song” (Season 20, Episode 7)
Sandler introduced his now-famous tune in 1994 as a holiday alternative to “Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel.”

“Adam Sandler as Opera Man” (Season 18, Episode 17)
Sandler’s Opera Man character was a frequent “Weekend Update” guest, quasi-rhyming his way through the day’s current events. In this 1993 segment, he skewered Donald Trump, Los Angeles, and the Grateful Dead.

“Song for the Summer” (Season 19, Episode 20)
Sandler took the SNL stage with guitar in tow on multiple occasions, delivering his punchlines via unexpected lyrics.

“How Much Ya Bench?” (Season 19, Episode 18)
In addition to his musical contributions, Sandler’s five seasons on SNL were notable for his work alongside fellow cast members like Chris Farley and David Spade. For this 1994 skit about “steroid-free weightlifters,” Farley’s over-the-top antics are balanced by Sandler’s meathead persona.

“Il Cantore Restaurant” (Season 17, Episode 3)
Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, and Rob Schneider are smarmy waiters who take turns groping Kirstie Alley in this raunchy 1991 bit, but it’s Sandler who steals the show when he strips down to serve water.

Sandler dusted off his guitar earlier this year on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a Fleet Week performance of “Friends on All Bases,” a take on Garth Brooks’s “Friends in Low Places.”
