9 Kitchen Trends You’ll See Everywhere in 2017 — And One That’s on the Way Out

You heard it here: 2017 will be the year of custom storage, stainless steel and shiplap.

Houzz has just released their Kitchen Trends Study for the new year, which polled 2,707 users who are in the midst of, are planning or have recently completed a kitchen renovation. From surprising health benefits to the millennial décor style of choice, the people have spoken and it’s farmhouse features, multicolored countertops and gray walls for the win. Here, the 10 major trends you need to know before you lift that sledgehammer.

1. Farmhouse is THE new favorite.
Shiplap’s not just for Waco, Texas anymore! The farmhouse style, which often uses the wood paneling made famous by Fixer Upper’s Joanna Gaines, is on the rise for millennial homeowners, although contemporary designs are still the most popular across all age groups.

2. Renovating your kitchen is good for your health.
A third of homeowners reported that their kitchen redos led to an overall healthier lifestyle, as it inspired respondents to prepare more meals at home and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.

3. Countertops are top of mind.
While backsplashes and sinks are close behind, 95% of renovating homeowners list countertops as their primary kitchen upgrade.

4. A fresh coat of paint is perennially popular.

When it comes to walls, paint is the clear winner for a quick and easy refresh. 72% of respondents chose the simple upgrade for their spaces, with ceramic or porcelain tile ranking as the second-best option at 34%.

5. We’re getting smarter about storage.
Savvy homeowners have their eyes on more customized storage solutions in 2017, as 64% are opting for pull-out waste or recycling cabinets, 53% are incorporating cookie sheet/tray organizers and 15% are streamlining their Vino supply by adding wine and bar cabinets.

6. Neutrals aren’t going anywhere.
Gray walls reign supreme with 26% of renovators choosing the foolproof hue. For cabinets, white remain as popular as ever, luring 42% to the light side. “Multicolor” is the most popular choice for countertops — think speckled granite and quartz — at 33%.

7. Looks are the top triggers.
When it comes to what motivates people to tackle a kitchen renovation, unsurprisingly 43% said it was because they “can no longer stand the old kitchen.” Fair enough.

8. Stainless steel is still reigning supreme.
It seems stainless-steel wont go out of style any time soon, as 72% of respondents listed the standard silver finish as the top color choice for appliances. Black stainless steel also had a solid showing.

9. Who wants to hand-wash?
Dishwashers are at the top of the list of appliances that homeowners choose to upgrade during a renovation, with gas ranges and cooktops also on the rise. Only 1% opt for a pizza oven.

10. This favorite might be falling out of style.
Although still the top choice for users overall at 41%, granite countertops are down 4% in popularity compared with the 2016 report. Quartz pulls a close second with butcher-block at third.
