6 Celebrities Struggling With Thyroid Disorders

Twenty million Americans suffer from thyroid disorders, according to the National Women’s Health Information Center. Model Gigi Hadid recently revealed that she is also coping with a thyroid illness.

“My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year. I have Hashimoto’s disease. It’s a thyroid disease,” Hadid, 21, said.

“It’s now been two years since taking the medication for it, so for the [Victoria’s Secret] show, I didn’t want to lose any more weight,” she continued. “I just want to have muscles in the right place, and if my butt can get a little perkier, then that’s good.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Hashimoto’s disease is a condition in which your immune system attacks your thyroid, a small gland at the base of your neck below your Adam’s apple. The thyroid gland is part of your endocrine system, which produces hormones that coordinate many of your body’s functions.”

Hadid’s mother, Yolanda Foster, and siblings Bella and Anwar Hadid also suffer from an autoimmune disorder. All three battle chronic Lyme disease — an inflammatory disease caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks.

Gigi Hadid is not alone in her struggle with thyroid disease. Find out which other celebrities suffer from a thyroid disorder in the video above.
