10 Movies Worth the Haul to the Multiplex in January 2017

From Esquire

Most moviegoers will spend January catching up on the numerous high-profile releases that came out in December. Nonetheless, if the first month of 2017 will afford moviegoers a chance to see some award-season hopefuls before the Oscars arrive in February, genre aficionados will also be satisfied with the latest installments in two action-heavy sci-fi/horror franchises starring ass-kicking heroines.

Underworld: Blood Wars (January 6)

Kate Beckinsale continues to prove that no one looks better slaying monsters while decked out in a black latex suit in this, the fifth chapter in the long-running franchise (and fourth starring the actress) about the war between vampires and werewolves.

Patriots Day (January 13 in wide release)

Mark Wahlberg finds himself at the center of the hunt for the Boston Marathon Bombing culprits in this based-on-recent-events thriller from director Peter Berg (who just teamed up with Wahlberg on Deepwater Horizon).

Live by Night (January 13 in wide release)

For his directorial follow-up to Best Picture winner Argo, Ben Affleck assumes the guise of a gangster trying to rise up the criminal ladder in this period-piece underworld drama.

Sleepless (January 13)

A remake of the 2011 French thriller Sleepless Night, this genre effort stars Jamie Foxx and T.I. as corrupt Las Vegas police officers trying to rescue one of their kidnapped sons.

xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage (January 20)

It's not clear if anyone really wanted Vin Diesel to return to the extreme-sports-007 xXx series, but nonetheless, this upcoming sequel seems ready to supply a heavy dose of insanely over-the-top action.

The Founder (January 20 in wide release)

Michael Douglas is the man who turns McDonald's from a local burger joint (owned by two brothers) into a franchise-crazy worldwide goliath in this well-received fast-food drama.

Split (January 20)

James McAvoy is a man with multiple personalities-including one of a more monstrous sort-who kidnaps three girls and holds them hostage in this twist-heavy thriller from The Sixth Sense's M. Night Shyamalan.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (January 27)

Regardless of whether it is, as it claims, the "final chapter," Paul W. S. Anderson's latest entry in the video game-based franchise will once again deliver superior zombie-splattering action courtesy of its super-powered heroine Alice, played by the peerless Milla Jovovich.

Gold (January 27)

Matthew McConaughey is bald and greedy in this drama about a businessman who teams up with a geologist (Edgar Ramirez) to find hidden gold buried deep in the Indonesian jungle-and, upon succeeding, must fight to retain it for himself.

Bastards (January 27)

In this R-rated comedy, Owen Wilson, and Ed Helms are brothers who, after believing for decades that their father was dead, learn that he's still alive and living somewhere in the U.S.-and thus set about on a cross-country road trip to find him.
