Your Skin Needs to Detox Too: Here’s How

While juice cleanses and green detoxes are all the rage, to lose pounds or reset your body, it turns our your skin needs to detox too. The beauty world has been buzzing about taking a break from makeup to let skin breathe -

But Adina Grigore, the founder of S.W. Basics skincare, takes it one step further in her book Skin Cleanse: The Simple, All-Natural Program for Clear, Calm, Happy Skin.

In her new book, she argues that less is more- and she means way less. For anyone suffering from skin issues, which could be acne, rashes or sensitivity- she argues that we need to remember that skin is our largest organ and is a reflection of not only what we put on it topically but what we put inside it. So diet and exercise play a huge role in skin health. She advocates going completely product free (that includes skin products and makeup) for 24 hours or longer to help identify which ingredients may be causing problem.

Are you ready to ditch everything in your medicine cabinet for a skin detox? Yahoo Beauty recently spoke to Grigore to find out more about how it all works.

Yahoo Beauty: You founded S.W. Basics skincare line but you suggest that people take a break from putting any products on their skin. Please explain that!

Adina Grigore: I created my own line of skincare products because I have such sensitive skin. The only way I found relief was to cut out all my products. Once I came out of that, I DIYed my own recipes. The ingredients I used on myself are the ingredients that S.W. Basics is grounded in.

Why do a skin detox? In your book you suggest that people go cold turkey on all their products, including makeup. That sounds scary.

It can be scary- but it’s also freeing. We are using so many products every day in our skin care as well as our makeup. It can easily add up to 12 a day and those products have tons of different ingredients so a break is a good way to hone in on what might be causing your skin issues. The number one way to control your skin is to a take a break from your products.

You suggest using only water to cleanse your face – and your hair. Why?

It’s one ingredient. It’s simple. It works. People don’t give water enough credit. It will clean your skin and it’s also the best way to cleanse your hair. A lot of people have aggravated skin because of their shampoo, especially medicated shampoos, which come into contact with your skin when rinsing.

In your book, you recommend doing DIY beauty recipes after a skin detox. What are some power ingredients?

Apple cider vinegar is just magical. It will help clear up excess oil and you can dilute it with water and apply like a toner. Olive oil doesn’t get enough attention. Its super light, very healthy and soaks right into your skin so it’s an ideal moisturizer. Sea salt is amazing exfoliator and kills bacteria. Honey is antibacterial and can cleanse and hydrate.

What is the role of food in skincare?

Food is the number one beauty product and the top way to change your skin. If you want to change your skin, there isn’t just one super food that will do it. A lot depends on your body. Some people add meat or cut dairy and see an improvement while others are the opposite. You have to figure out what works for you although I will say that for many people with skin issues, cutting out dairy makes a big difference. But the more greens, fresh fruit, and probiotics you can add to your diet, the better.

What about fats?

Fat is great for skin and beauty – such as fats found in foods like olive oil, avocado, sardines or mackerel. Fat is a great way to hydrate from the inside.
