Dear Bobbi,

I really like the look of cream blush but I don’t know how to apply it. Do you put it in the same spots as you would a powder blush? Should I put it on with a sponge, my hands, or a brush?

Dear Kristin,

To apply cream blush, start by smiling and use your fingers to apply two dabs of blush onto the apples of your cheeks. Blend the blush back along your cheekbones and then blend down to soften the blush. Cream blush fades throughout the day, so don’t be afraid to use a little more.

Choose a blush color that is in the same color family as your lipstick. Your natural blush color—which you can find by matching the color of your cheeks after you pinch them—is the perfect go-to color for blush. If you’re not sure what color to choose, go with a pink blush, pink works beautifully on most skin tones. If you are going with a red lipstick for the holidays pair it with a soft pink blush.

I’ve always used blush, but someone recently recommended I use bronzer instead. Is one better than the other? Or should fair skin ladies stick to using blush so they don’t end up looking orange!?

Everyone can wear a bronzer, but it’s important to choose a bronzer that looks like the color you would tan in the sun. For fair skin, select something that has a pinkish tone to it and apply it where the sun would hit your skin.

You’ll want to start with three products: a bronzer, a blush and a highlighter. The bronzer can be applied where you want to add depth and warmth. Blush should be applied to the apples of your cheeks to brighten your face. Apply a highlighter to the top of your cheekbones to give you a lifted, illuminated look.
