As any beauty fan knows, Bobbi Brown is queen of the no-makeup makeup look. In 1991, her beauty line debuted at Bergdorf Goodman and just a few years later she sold it to Estée Lauder in 1995. Needless to say, her collection has had a cult following ever since. She’s also written nine books, many of which, like Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty, remain classics.
Yet late last year, the makeup mogul announced that she’d be departing her namesake line, leaving everything behind. But lucky for us, she later made a statement in a Refinery29 essay about how she wouldn’t be leaving the industry completely. Now, just a few months after Brown penned that essay, she spoke to The Cut about why she really left her brand, and the question we’ve all been wondering: why she never made a contour palette.
"I hate contouring. It’s telling people there’s something wrong with their face," Brown told The Cut. “It doesn’t make sense to me. I never made a contour palette, and I had a lot of pressure to do it. It just doesn’t look good. To me, pretty, healthy, glowing skin is all about moisture and hydration. If you wear red lips or a smoky eye, that’s up to you."
In the interview, Brown also divulged a bit about her signature vision for makeup, one that differs from the contoured trend. She said: "When I came into the industry, it was a time when everyone was doing contoured faces and overdrawn lips. I was amazed at how good the girls looked when they washed their faces. A makeup artist told me, 'If you don’t do the contour, you’ll never work in this town.' And I just couldn’t do it." So in the end, it’s not a surprise that Brown skipped out on making a contour palette. All she did was follow her instincts which have not let her down before.
The iconic makeup artist, author and brand founder hasn’t yet announced what she'll be up to in the beauty industry, but it turns out that since leaving her namesake brand, she’s been busy with other things. She’s been writing her ninth book, Beauty from the Inside Out: Makeup, Wellness, Confidence (out next month!) and renovating a hotel in her hometown of Montclair, New Jersey with her husband Steven Plofker. Fingers crossed she’ll somehow be involved in more cult-worthy products in the near future.
