Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn is sure to be one of the most popular costumes during this year’s Halloween festivities. Thousands of makeup artists have already posted their favorite finished looks of the villain, hoping to give others inspiration for how to re-create it themselves. One makeup artist, however, just created a Harley Quinn makeup look that’s made rounds across the Internet much faster than the others.
Nora Belk posted an image of her take on the comic book character to her Instagram, incorporating her hijab into the finished look. Captioned, “When you try to be harley quinn for halloween and you realize you wear a hijab,” on Instagram, the look is a way for Muslim women who wear a hijab to dress up as Harley Quinn as well. You can see the Halloween look for yourself below:
“If you can work a pun into your Halloween costume and stick to your religious beliefs and dress up as something topical, I’m super impressed,” said one commenter on Reddit. While others wrote things like, “now THIS is clever! BRILLIANT!” and “of the six thousand Harleys that will be out there this Halloween, this is already among my favorites.”
When asked about her decision to incorporate the hijab into her Halloween look, Belk told Pedestrian.tv that the hijab “is part of my identity and who I stand for, so I wear it proudly.” But that’s not the only message she wanted to send to her followers. “Especially with social media, things like this surprise people — often people see the hijab as oppression, but for me it’s freedom,” she added during the interview.
Women and their hijabs have been making the news a lot lately. Recently, one woman even became the first Muslim to wear her hijab in Playboy magazine.
Considering all the political and social backlash Muslim women have been receiving for wearing their hijabs, it’s not surprising many are working to take the stigma away from their attire.
