Video of Toddler Almost Drowning in a Floatie Is a Scary Wake-Up Call

From Good Housekeeping

To most parents, a kid covered in sunscreen and in a floatie is a kid ready to take on any kiddie pool, but a viral video is reminding parents that no matter how prepared your children may seem, you must always keep a close eye on them.

In a short video clip taken at a community pool, several children are playing in a shallow kiddie pool. One toddler is seated in a "full-body inner-tube floatation device," Pop Sugar reports. The video plays for a few seconds, and then shows the child falling forward, head-first into the water. In the heartwrenching clip, the toddler is trying to kick his feet to try and pull himself up, however, because of the weight of the floatie, the toddler is unable to pull himself out of the water.

Luckily, another child quickly turns around and in mere seconds was able to pull the toddler's floatation device upright and saved the toddler from drowning.

This scary incident raises the question: How safe are floaties really? According to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, some flotation devices are designed to assist with building swimming skills and tilt children into a forward swimming motion. Although not much is known about this specific situation, it seems that might have been the case.

The NDPA recommends using only US Coast Guard-approved life jackets that have been designed and tested for safety. And remember, even if your child knows how to swim or is with an older sibling or friend, parental supervision is always necessary.
