While this trend apparently isn’t new, it was new to our staff when we heard about it this morning: Men are deliberately scheduling their vasectomies right before March Madness. Why? According to an ESPN article, “Men have found a loophole that turns one of life’s more unpleasant procedures into a four-day vasectomy vacation that coincides perfectly with March Madness.”

Yes, this is real. It’s known as Vas Madness, and it’s a “clever” idea gaining popularity among men who want to chill out on the couch and watch basketball, uninterrupted.

The University of Utah health care center has an entire page on its site advertising Vas Madness. The team-colored promo greets fans with an enticing checklist: Recliner, Chips and Dip, Remote, Vasectomy. Pardon me for crashing the party, but one of these things is not like the other!

"If you’re planning on spending your weekends this March watching college basketball, why not take advantage of all that time in front of your TV and get a vasectomy done?" they reason. "Be ready to go in the postseason! Get your game on now!" Boom shakalaka! But being "ready to go" isn’t the real reason men are doing this. It’s the pity, medically sanctioned couch time, and vacation days that are really sealing the deal. Because, really, for a true basketball fan, unprotected-but-protected sex with your wife is great and all, but being able to miss work to recline on the couch and watch March Madness without guilt is a far greater gift.

Oh, and one more thing! “Each patient scheduling an appointment during Vas Madness will receive a complimentary recovery kit, complete with a basketball-shaped ice pack,” says the University of Utah health care center. Isn’t that sweet?
