While getting a sunburn is never pleasant, we would advise you to be careful if you’re treating it with aloe vera. According to researchers from Bloomberg News, your favorite aloe vera product might not have any aloe vera in it after all. That’s nuts! As a result of their study, Wal-Mart, Target, CVS, and Walgreens are all under fire. Three out of the four stores failed to provide aloe vera in their products despite their advertising.

So instead of spending your hard earned money on those products, we would advise avoiding specific brands. In addition to Wal-Mart’s Equate Aloe After Sun Gel, avoid Target’s Up & Up Aloe Vera Gel and CVS Aftersun Aloe Vera Moisturizing Gel; Walgreens Alcohol Free Aloe Vera Body Gel was also tested but results were inconclusive. Spend your cash somewhere else!

According to Bloomberg:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t approve cosmetics before they’re sold and has never levied a fine for selling fake aloe. That means suppliers are on an honor system, even as the total U.S. market for aloe products, including drinks and vitamins, has grown 11 percent in the past year to $146 million, according to Chicago-based market researcher SPINS LLC.”

According to Christopher Foote, a PhD at the University of Glasgow, aloe vera originated in the Arabian peninsula. Because of the gel inside its leaves, aloe is used to treat burns. They even use aloe in hospitals now.
