Lady Gaga delivered a powerful performance of her new hit single, “Million Reasons,” on the U.K.’s The X Factor Sunday night. However, it wasn’t her incredible vocals or flashy custom Diesel ensemble that got people talking — it was the singer’s face.

Fans took to Twitter to comment on how “different” they felt the singer’s face looked during the appearance.

Many viewers commented that Gaga looked like a “different person” entirely. Check out how some people reacted on Twitter:

Some speculated the singer had gotten work done since her last appearance on the show.

Whether or not Gaga got any plastic surgery since her last appearance remains a mystery, but it’s undeniable that her face appears to be heavily made up and contoured.

Makeup artists help people drastically alter their physical appearances through simple practices like contouring, highlighting, and shading. Whether it’s to help the nose appear slimmer or to emphasize cheekbones, makeup can make dramatic changes to one’s appearance.

Lady Gaga is also known for constantly changing her look and never shying away from experimentation, but she’s never admitted to plastic surgery. She did share an interesting story on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM Radio show back in 2013. “I’ve never had any work-work done, but I went through a phase when I was smoking pot when I was really obsessed with getting facial injections,” she said.

“I was going to this strip mall in Chicago in the back … Everybody was like, ‘You are a nutjob.’… I’m telling you, I wasn’t exactly in the best frame of mind, and I would smoke a bunch of joints and have some drinks, and I would be like, ‘Oh, let’s go see my girl,’ and we would drive to this strip mall, and I would get shot up with a bunch of whatever, Juvéderm, and then leave. … Now all the stuff is gone. Before I shot the ‘Applause’ video, [a photographer friend] was like, ‘Gaga, I love you, but if you don’t stop injecting s**t in your face, I’m going to just kill you.'”

Celebrities often face public scrutiny over whether or not they received plastic surgery. Stars like Uma Thurman, Mary Kate Olsen, Meg Ryan, Renee Zellweger, and Courteney Cox have all been slammed in the past with plastic surgery rumors.

Oftentimes it’s not that celebrities have had work done but that factors like lighting and makeup have influenced how they’re pictured, which prompts fans to comment. But some stars feel they cannot publicly acknowledge getting work done even when they actually do because of the negative implications and public shame that is often attached to the practice.

“Women who receive recognizable, excessive, or bad plastic surgery get double-shamed,” body image expert Robyn Silverman has told Yahoo Style in the past. “The initial criticism is provided when their appearance starts to deviate from the high standards set by society and Hollywood. The second bout of shame comes after the process when the results are less than optimal or too obvious.”

Lady Gaga could’ve simply had a lot of makeup on last night, or she could’ve gotten work done — either way she looked stunning.
