“OK, so my new favorite thing is cornrows with f**ked-up parts,” Tracee Ellis Ross proclaims in a now-viral video she posted to her Instagram yesterday. The 43-year-old co-star of the ABC comedy Black-ish (and daughter of Diana Ross) goes on to point out her gray roots, saying, “Look, mama’s showing her age,” and singing, “I’m not afraid of my age!” with a beaming smile on her face.

Her followers applauded her cheerful candor, saying things like, “She is phenomenal!” and “I love gray. And you look absolutely gorgeous, darling. Muah!!!” One fan joked, “Those are called ‘natural highlights’ in your roots!”

Just recently, Demi Moore — more gorgeous than ever at age 53 — embraced her natural gray during an outing in West Hollywood. At age 47, Stacy London — former host of What Not to Wear and current contributor to ABC’s The View — makes a style statement by letting her silver streaks shine through her brunette mane. And the fashion-forward former ’80s “it” girl Lisa Bonet, now 48, made headlines a few years ago by shaving one side of her head and flaunting her gray roots in the most rock-star way possible.

But it’s famously body-positive actress Jamie Lee Curtis — she once posed for More magazine in her undies to champion self-love — who is the poster child for natural-hair acceptance. There’s no shame in her game when it comes to rocking a full head of white hair at age 57.

In recent years, gray hair has been considered so chic that younger celebrities like Kelly Osbourne, Rita Ora, and Girls star Zosia Mamet have gone gray on purpose, dyeing some or all of their hair a silvery hue. Mamet’s colorist called the trend “antique gray.”

So if some stars are choosing to go gray before their time as a fashion statement, and others are confidently embracing their “gray pride,” it turns out there is a silver lining to getting older — literally!
