This 19-Year-Old’s #EgoChallenge Is Exactly What We All Need to Practice Self-Positivity Now
Whether you have high or low self-esteem, you’ve probably experienced insecurity about a physical feature or another at some point in your life. While that might be true for most of us, one 19-year-old had a different idea about how people should approach their so-called insecurities.
It all started with a simple yet eye-opening tweet (below), where Jane Oranika presented a call to action encouraging people to embrace their personal flaws. The #EgoChallenge was born.
I wanna start the #EgoChallenge ☺️ we all have flaws and it's better to brag about them to be insecure. y'all should join in ????????✨ pic.twitter.com/ZJhEpRFHgg

She posted a video clip of herself freestyling over Beyoncé’s hit song “Ego.” As she raps to the instrumentals, she reveals her personal flaws and backs each statement up with a positive thought about herself.
The Alabama-based musician also reposted the clip on Instagram with a caption that read, “Lol, I really wish the #EgoChallenge was a thing. can we make it a thing? a lot of issues in society stem from people having low self worth and projecting that pain onto others. in a world where perfect is unattainable, I’m proud to say I love who I am. physically and mentally. decided to write a little bit. pardon my flex. ???????? instrumental: “Ego” x @Beyonce ????????”
Oranika told Yahoo Beauty, “The #EgoChallenge was inspired by the fact that I think we all need a little more positivity in our lives. I think many issues in the world stem from hurt people hurting people, and the main way to overcome that starts with first loving ourselves. As an artist, I get questions about my appearance as well as aesthetic, and I’ve always found it strange how a person can have so much to offer yet we judge based on superficial ‘flaws.’ I wanted to address them, and let it be known that I love myself and everyone else should too.”

“I was listening to old instrumentals one night and ‘Ego’ came on,” she said. “I immediately thought to myself, ‘What if this song was about flaws? How dope would that be?!’ The words came automatically as I played it. It kind of just picked up, and wrote itself.”
With the current political climate in the U.S., as well as Beyoncé’s recent pregnancy announcement, this challenge couldn’t have come at a better time. It has been spreading like wildfire across social media.
Celebrities are starting to jump in on this self-positivity movement too. Danielle Brooks from the hit Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, posted on Instagram, “I’ve been super sick all night and all morning but this #egochallenge brought me so much joy! I had to make one myself. D-Money on the track! And #Beyoncé is pregnant.”

“I can’t say I have a favorite participant, simply because literally everyone who has participated has made me tear up a little,” says Oranika. “I can, however, say that Danielle Brooks and Cynthia Erivo participating made me extremely happy because they are two influential women who were bold enough to talk about their flaws to massive audiences. I love that they have that confidence because so many people, including myself, look up to them.”

Oranika has been just as overjoyed as everyone else partaking in the #EgoChallenge. “I’m honestly so overwhelmed and joyful that it was received so well. I find it beautiful that so many people are being vocal and addressing the things we’re afraid to bring up about ourselves. I feel like there’s this sense of solidarity — we’re all flawed and still somehow perfect. I feel proud that I was able to use my platform for such positivity,” she says.
It just might be time to brush up on your rapping and singing skills because this is one challenge that’s certainly sure to stick and remind everyone to love themselves — flaws and all.
