Though warm summer days seem long gone and far away, there’s still hope for the glowing complexion they bring, and you won’t find the solution in your medicine cabinet or makeup bag. It’s water. 90 percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Every day, we lose 2½ to 3 liters of water just from walking, eating and sleeping. Add exercise and the dry winter air into this mix and you’re easily losing 3½ to 4 liters of water each day.

Parched, rough or flaky skin is one of the first signs of dehydration and an imbalance in your body’s pH level. Your pH is tightly controlled to balance the acidity and alkalinity of your body to keep everything running optimally. If your body is fighting off acid, it has to go into overdrive to stay balanced, and it calls upon its largest detoxifying organ to help, the skin. So whether you are dealing with dry skin, wrinkles, acne, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, dermatitis, etc., it is a sign that you are over-acidic.

So how do you keep your pH balanced and your skin bright and healthy? Eating foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals like colorful vegetables is a great start. Getting plenty of exercise and sleep will help even more. And avoiding acid-filled foods like alcohol, coffee, milk and cheese, sugar and processed foods will go a long way toward balancing your pH level. But the best way you can fight acid, avoid dehydration, balance your pH level, and keep your glowy complexion, drink an average of 3 to 4 liters of pure, alkaline water daily.

So what is pure, alkaline water? Adding lemon or lime to your water makes it more alkaline forming and helps your body neutralize acids. There are 327 known contaminants in tap water so make sure it is filtered. Avoid bottled water as it is almost always acidic, instead of alkaline, and possibly filled with BPAs, a known carcinogenic, from the plastic bottle. Chilled water is harder for your body to process so go with room temperature. You can also add in necessary alkaline nutrients that your body needs by adding a green nutrient powder.

Most importantly, you should be drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Drinking plenty of water will not only give your skin radiance, it will also increase your metabolism and help you lose weight.
