The Secret to Making Shiny Lids Last

How to make a backstage beauty favorite budge-proof.

The glossy eye has been a longtime favorite on the runway, and Spring ’15 was no exception, with the shiny stuff appearing at shows like Kenzo, Thakoon, and Proenza Schouler. The only problem with the lustrous look? Longevity. Makeup artist Vincent Oquendo, however, has discovered the secret to prolonging the effect for up to eight hours: airbrushing, a tool he used to create the eyes in the image above. “It isn’t as intimidating as it looks—the process has been demystified over the past two years or so,” he explained of the maquillage machines often employed by the pros (as seen backstage at Prada’s Spring 2014 show).

Oquendo used a waterproof liquid taupe from Kett Cosmetics, but a transfer-resistant foundation pod that comes with a prepackaged kit—like those from Temptu—works, too. Next, place a mirror on a table below you, angling your chin up so that you can better see the contours of your eyes, and mist a light veil of color from lash line to crease. “You can’t rush with waterproof formulas—take the extra five minutes and build depth gradually,” Oquendo said. If you’re not game to strategically spray on your makeup, he suggests applying Sephora Collection Jumbo Liner to the back of your hand and using a fluffy brush to apply. Add a few coats of waterproof mascara on top and bottom (or layer your go-to tube with Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Genius Waterproof Top Coat) and finish with the tiniest dollop of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream on the center of your lid. “Don’t place it any higher than your crease, then look up right, left, and down—the product will naturally travel.”
