The Pink $8 Egg That's Keeping My Makeup Brushes Gunk-Free

Whining about having to clean your makeup brushes is a source of beauty-junkie camaraderie. It’s like kvetching about the weather or a crappy boss: Saddle up to a beauty lover, drop “I hate washing my makeup brushes,” and you’ll have at least two minutes of conversation on your hands. But I have a secret: I kind of love washing my brushes.

It’s all thanks to this hot pink Egg Brush Cleaner that recently arrived on my desk from Beauteque, an online Korean beauty vendor. Rubber, ridged, and about the size of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Egg, it’s like a mini washboard for your brushes. Here’s how you use it: Slip the rubber egg onto your finger through the bottom opening. Mix equal parts soap or shampoo and water in a bowl, then swirl your dirty brush in the mixture. Rub the brush up and down the egg, lengthwise, for about a minute, or until the subsequent foam turns from a muddy café au lait to a soapy white. Rinse, and repeat if you’d like (I did, but I don’t think it got them any cleaner), then lay the brush flat to dry overnight.

I’ve always found it cathartic to watch the dirty water wash down the drain, like checking something off my to-do list (makeup brushes: cleaned). And we know it’s essential to wash brushes regularly — bacteria- and oil-laden brushes can cause everything from acne to staph infections. But the process has always been too messy and time-consuming to fully enjoy: Should I just rub the brushes in the palm of my hand? How did I know my hands were actually clean to start with? Was I actually doing anything, or just moving the gunk further up into the brush? The egg cleaner takes all the guesswork out: it’s a dip, rub, rinse equation. And unlike my constantly germy hands, the egg rinses clean.

So quit procrastinating on washing your brushes, and join me on team “it’s fun!” We’ll still have plenty to talk about — like how clean our skin looks, for starters.
