Baby, it’s cold outside. It may be a great song, but it’s a terrible thing for your face! The frigid temperatures and blustering winds often leave your complexion raw, red, and dehydrated. In search of a natural fix that wouldn’t break the bank (or our faces further) we consulted our skincare guru, Shamara Bondaroff of SB Skin. As an expert in vegan beauty, Bondaroff offered up a simple solution for our winter woes. The best news? It’s probably in your cabinet already.

SB recommends raw honey as the best remedy for the winter months because of it’s anti-bacterial qualities. Simply put, this superfood contains all the natural enzymes to soothe everything from rosacea to dryness. It’s medicinal qualities can benefit everyone — especially those prone to acne.

However, it is imperative to ensure that you are using raw honey. Regular honey (aka the honey in the bear shaped bottle) is pasteurized, which means that it is devoid of any good bacterial enzymes to heal your complexion. As far as brand goes, She recommends BEE RAW, a local honey brand based in New York. She says it’s best to chose a local variety as you will benefit the most from their properties.

The below honey recipes from SB can be used as a face wash or left on for 10-15 minutes as a mask. Here’s to a healthy complexion this winter!

For Everyday:

- 1 Tablespoon raw honey

For Acne Prone Skin:

- 1 Tablespoon raw honey

- 3 Drops lavender essential oil or tea tree oil

For the Scrub Version:

- 1 Tablespoon raw honey

- ½ Teaspoon baking soda

After using this scrub, apply a toner to skin. Bondaroff recommends making your own with a 50/50 ratio of apple cider vinegar to water.
