The New Potato’s New York City Beauty Guide

Sisters Danielle & Laura Kosann are the founders of The New Potato, the beautiful site attracting foodies and fashion-lovers alike. They’ve profiled a parade of the most in-the-know tastemakers, from Karlie Kloss and Jessica Alba, to Andrew Carmellini and Martha Stewart, to get their recipes, opinions, and food-related secrets. We turned the tables, asking Danielle and Laura to give us their personal beauty guide to New York City. Here are their picks for the best places to get gorgeous in the city.

HAIRCUT

Laura: The Sally Hershberger salon on the Upper East Side. Chris Lospalluto is the best stylist, he listens to you and doesn’t push you into anything, and really gets not blow-drying in a cheesy ‘sitcom’ way as Danielle and I call it, but edgier.

Danielle: Bumble & bumble all the way. I’ve very low-maintenance with my hair, and believe it or not I usually just book whoever is free. I have yet to be disappointed. I use their products obsessively as well, I love the Crème de Coco Shampoo ($24) and Conditioner ($26), and their dry shampoo is the best I’ve ever tried. For styling, Jay at John Barrett is also one of my favorites, especially for special events. He does a really great job of making it look exactly the way you want—and he’s just a great guy.

MANICURE

Laura: Bliss always does a reliable, no-risk-of-chipping job. I love the hot milk and almond 60-minute pedicure.

Danielle: Tenoverten is the best. I love that it doesn’t feel like a traditional nail salon with its chic, minimal design. I’m a sucker for perfect aesthetics, so everything from their branding to the pretty, neutral color scheme makes me happy.

MASSAGE

Laura: Cowshed at Soho House is always great for massages. I love their Swedish massage since my pressure tolerance isn’t that great; it’s just right.

Danielle: I’m obsessed with AIRE Ancient Baths in Tribeca. They use a lot of really relaxing oils and I love being able to go in the different baths first.

MAKEUP

Laura: I usually just go all out at Barneys, Bergdorfs or Saks. There’s something about shopping for beauty products at the quintessential department stores in New York! Tom Ford for perfume and nail polish, Yves Saint Laurent’s highlighter stick is my go-to, Sisley, Chanel for great lipstick, and DiorShow Mascara ($25).

Danielle: I buy most of my makeup from Bergdorf Goodman or Barneys. Bobbi Brown’s Tinted Moisturizer ($44), Rodin Face ($150) and Body Oil ($110), and Tom Ford makeup are some of my go-tos. If I’m getting my makeup done, Mercedes at John Barrett salon is the best. She just adapts really well to what you want done. Our friend Stephanie March just opened a makeup salon called Rouge NY in Soho; they do amazing, natural looking makeup so that you don’t feel like you just had your makeup done, which I love.

SKINCARE

Laura: I go to dermatologist Debra Wattenberg on the Upper East Side for a checkup every now and then, and for tips when my skin’s feeling dull! Her products are also my favorite. My skin’s just been brighter and better since I started using them.

Danielle: My father-in-law, Rand Werbitt, is an amazing dermatologist, so I’m pretty lucky that I don’t have to go far for good skincare. I’m not really one for facials, but I love his products. Every time I feel like I might be getting a pimple I use his ‘No More Blemish’ pads and it’s gone the next day.

FITNESS

Laura: I like to do yoga, as well as Ballet Beautiful, which is such a great workout because it both tones and elongates. I also love to do different types of cardio. Soulcycle is always good, you just feel like you’re burning tons and tons of calories. I’ve always been a runner, so I love to do that along the West Side Highway when it’s nice outside.

Danielle: I train at ModelFIT, either with Stephen or Rosalia, and it’s honestly transformed my body. It’s the best shape I’ve ever been in.
