The Best Super Bowl Beauty Moments of All Time

By Abby Gardner

Who are we kidding: Besides the commercials, the best part of the Super Bowl is the halftime show. And this year, we couldn’t be more excited to see Katy Perry take the stage. While nobody knows exactly what the pop star has planned for Super Bowl XLIX, we’re fairly certain Perry will be bringing her best (and wildest) beauty game. But until then, we take a look at the standout hair and makeup looks from years past.

Britney Spears
Super Bowl XXXV
Spears was at her peak when she performed at the halftime show in 2001 along with ‘N Sync, Aerosmith, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly. The tube-sock-on-the-arm may not be your thing, but you have to admit: Her skin glowed, her makeup was perfection, and her rock and roll hair texture was totally badass.

Gwen Stefani
Super Bowl XXXVII
No Doubt hit the stage in 2003 along with Shania Twain and Sting. (How’s that for a random lineup?) Gwen was the beauty standout, natch. She belted out “Just a Girl” while wearing her signature red lip and platinum pompadour—both of which she can still rock to this day.

Tracy Porter
Super Bowl XLIV
As a cornerback for the New Orleans Saints in 2010, Porter used his version of “The Secret” to bring home the win for his team. Known for his eccentric hairstyles (like Pac-Man ghosts shaved into his hair), Porter opted for an outline of the Vince Lombardi Trophy (the award for the NFL champion team) buzzed onto the right side of his head for the championship game. And it worked! He even made a big play near the end that sealed the victory.

Gisele Bündchen
Super Bowl XLVI
The supermodel may have gotten more press at 2012’s Super Bowl for her comments after the game about how his Patriot teammates let down her husband, Tom Brady, but we just remember her resplendent hair and no-makeup beauty as she cheered from the owner’s box. Other football wives should take note.

Madonna
Super Bowl XLVI
A whopping 114 million people tuned in to watch Madge do her thing during halftime in 2012. We’re having a hard time deciding which was more sublime—her smoky-eye-and-cascading-curls combo or her crazy acrobatics.

Beyoncé
Super Bowl XLVII
Bey bookended 2013 in a massively impressive fashion: performing a medley of hits at Super Bowl XLVII (some thought she might have caused a power outage at the New Orleans Superdome) and dropping her surprise visual album that December. When the rest of Destiny’s Child (Hi, Kelly and Michelle!) popped out from below the stage to join Queen B, it was a good hair moment the likes of which football fans may never see again.

Alessandra Ambrosio, Hayden Panettiere, and Adriana Lima
Super Bowl XLVIII
These three mastered casual football chic at Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. It certainly helps that they’re all naturally beautiful, but each one looks like she’s there to have some fun and watch a great game rather than pose for the paps on a red carpet. Well done, girls!

Erin Andrews
Super Bowl XLVIII
Year after year, sportscaster Andrews manages to look effortlessly gorgeous while reporting from the sidelines—even in the freezing cold. And we absolutely coveted her thick waves and perfectly placed highlights when she reported from the sidelines in 2014.

Jennifer Garner
Super Bowl XLVIII
Jennifer Garner often talks about what a sports fan she’s become since marrying Ben Affleck (a huge New England Patriots fan). She definitely looked the part with a perfect (and jealousy-inducing) ponytail and wispy bangs at the Super Bowl in 2014. The easygoing style would fit right in at any tailgate party.

Bruno Mars
Super Bowl XLVIII
Before he gave us “Uptown Funk,” Bruno Mars took his talents and his signature pompadour to the Super Bowl in 2014. In a feat we weren’t sure was possible, his hair seemed even higher in honor of the huge venue. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, we’ll leave up to you.
