The Best Makeup to Temporarily Cover Up Tattoos Like Lady Gaga’s

Lady Gaga performed for the British royal family on Tuesday night looking as gorgeous as ever, but there was something different about her look. Gaga’s usually inked arms and back were bare and tattoo-free.

This isn’t the first time Gaga left her tattoos at home for a special event. At the Golden Globes in January, Gaga went with a ’50s look and decided not to bring her tattoos with her to the red carpet before she won her award.

For the awards show, Gaga enlisted makeup artist Mike Mekash, who works on American Horror Story with the singer, to cover her many tattoos. Mekash revealed that he used an acrylic adhesive-based makeup called Pax along with skin illustrators — professional makeup often used in film — to seamlessly cover her tattoos. “The covers I did looked great on the red carpet and on stage when she WON! And for 99% of the press photos,” Mekash said on Facebook.

Dermablend is also known for its opacity and tattoo-covering properties. The brand even used its tattoo-covering collection to completely hide the tattoos on model “Zombie Boy” Rick Genest, who starred in Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video and is inked from head to toe.

Other popular tattoo-concealing formulas include Kat Von D’s Lock-It, which Kat herself uses to cover the tattoos on her face, and Kryolan Dermacolor, which is a heavy formula often used in Hollywood for full coverage.

If you’re interested in temporarily covering your tattoos for a special event, as Lady Gaga did, we also recommend setting the makeup with a powder or spray so you don’t have to worry about smudging and can have fun playing dress-up for the night.
