The Best Face Mists to Keep You Cool This Summer

With balmy temps outside and frigid AC air inside, our skin gets confused in the rapid descent from sweaty to ice cold. To regulate and tone skin, plus stay refreshed and comfortably cool all day long, keeping a great face mist packed with hydrating and nourishing ingredients on your desk (or in a mini fridge) is one of the best beauty products for battling heat all summer long.

Don’t believe it? Trust a pro. “I use face mists in two ways. I use them on clients to prep the skin before makeup. It allows moisturizer to sink in better,” says Chanel celebrity makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. She adds that spritzing on a refreshing face mist after applying makeup is just as beneficial and actually helps makeup look more natural and settled into skin. “Makeup looks better when it’s had time to melt into the skin and integrate,” says Goodwin. “It’s like how Elizabeth Taylor used to take a bath after putting on her makeup so the steam would help it look more natural — this is the same thing. A face mist moves the makeup into the skin and livens it up so it doesn’t look too flat.”

And for days when you just need a little pick me up post-lunch and pre-end of day, reach for light, botanical based sprays like rosewater or formulas packed with other soothing elements like lavender, cucumber and orange, to perk up the skin and senses.

Face mists can also help skin battle the fickle summer environment that goes from cold office AC air inside to humid, often smoggy skies outside. In this case, Goodwin suggests hydrating throughout the day with a treatment-based spray like Chanel Hydra Beauty Essence Mist. “It has hyaluronic acid in it, which will sink into the skin and seal moisture in.” She also recommends Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir, a cult-favorite that contains bitter orange flower water and peppermint oil. “This takes you into spa mode so fast,” says Goodwin. “This is especially good on a hot day, because it cools and calms the skin down.”

Try these other face sprays throughout the summer to cool, hydrate and keep skin from succumbing to the escalating temperatures. Tip: Keep sprays in the fridge in order to make skin feel even more refreshed.
