The Adult Coloring Trend Has Spread to Makeup

This season’s makeup applicator of choice? The crayon. Lipsticks are now lip crayons, eyebrow pencils are now eyebrow crayons, eyeshadow palettes are now eyeshadow crayons … you get the picture. They’re seriously pigmented, a breeze to bring and use on the go, and just plain fun (who doesn’t love a crayon?).

Clinique Chubby Stick, the OG thick, easy-to-wield crayon, has always been a fan favorite. But the options have seriously exploded over the past few months — there’s a crayon for every need, in every color. Yahoo Beauty took a look at the options.

Sisley Phyto Lip Twist is like a tinted balm in crayon form, combining two of the best activities out there — drawing and moisturizing. The colors aren’t as long-lasting as other lip crayons, but they’re handy when you’ve got dry lips and need a color boost.

Bite Matte Creme Lip Crayon, on the other hand, packs a serious pigment punch. Its shades are bright and last for hours but don’t offer much in the way of moisturizer. Layer over a balm for best results, unless your lips are preternaturally moist.

Honest Beauty Truly Kissable Lip Crayons are a happy medium. Packed with antioxidant-rich oils to keep lips soft, they come in two formulas — sheer and demi matte — that are easy to swipe on, even for those who have trouble coloring in the lines.

Drawing on your eyelids sounds a little scary, but it’s actually pretty fun — especially if you do it with Flower Beauty Eyeshadow Chubby. It’s thick and easy to grip, and its domed surface delivers wide swaths of creamy shadow. The color goes on lighter than expected, so it’s hard to go overboard without realizing it — good news, since it’s hard to keep one eye open while you’re drawing on the lid of the other.

Milk Makeup Shadow Liner is darker and a little thinner — hold it one way to use as a liner, hold it the other to use as an eyeshadow, almost like an oil pastel.

Moving up to eyebrows, the pencil-and-powder brow kit has been reduced to, you guessed it, a crayon. Maybelline Brow Drama Pomade Crayon tames brows and adds color in one sweep. You won’t get the same fine-hair-mimicking technology that comes from a smaller pencil, but you will cut major time out of your routine.

NYX Cosmetics Hydra Touch Brightener, a water-based crayon, lets you draw on illuminator where you need it. Josie Maran Argan Creamy Concealer Crayon does the same for undereyes and blemishes, removing dirty fingers and brushes from the equation.

Here’s the best part of it all: If you find yourself terribly stressed and want to draw to calm down, grab your makeup and find an adult coloring book (like, ahem, we did in the picture above). Just keep everything out of the hands of color-happy toddlers.
