A 24-year-old former middle school teacher in Texas has pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a 13-year-old student after becoming pregnant by him earlier this year. Court records show that Alexandria Vera, who was teaching eighth-grade English at Houston's Stovall Middle School at the time of the alleged crime, met the victim in summer school in 2015. In September, they began a sexual relationship, and ABC13 News reports that Alexandria Vera admitted to the police that she and the victim had sex "on almost a daily basis." She became pregnant in January and told the teen's family members, who were reportedly "supportive and excited," but she had an abortion in February after Texas Child Protective Services officials made a surprise visit to the middle school to ask about allegations of sexual contact between her and a student.

A warrant for Vera's arrest was issued in May, at which point she surrendered to police; by pleading guilty to aggravated sexual assault, she has reduced her maximum possible sentence from 25 years to five. The victim is currently in foster care.
