Taylor Swift's New 'Maxim' Cover

Back in November, an androgynous, bare-faced Taylor Swift made headlines when she graced the cover of Wonderland magazine. The team at Wonderland was praised for giving the singer a grown up, tough look — gone was her signature eyeliner and pretty red lip and in its place a bold brow and bronze glow. And now it seems we weren’t the only ones who loved this look on Swift.

The 25-year-old graces the cover of the June/July issue of Maxim, where she has earned the #1 spot on the magazines 2015 Hot 100 list. Swift on the cover is definitely a shift for the magazine, but her beauty look is something we’ve seen before. After looking into this similarity a bit more, we found that the Maxim cover photo is actually a reprint of a photo from the Wonderland editorial by photographer Thomas Whiteside.

The men’s magazine has been undergoing an overhaul over the last few months under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Kate Lanphear, formerly of Elle magazine. “It’s a dream to work with a star like Taylor Swift and we’re thrilled to include her as #1,” says Lanphear. “We’ve redefined hot this year. It’s not just about beauty, it’s about relevance and what’s exciting in the world today and no one personifies that more than Taylor. We’ve gone from 0 to 60 since the rebrand and to have Taylor as #1 is a testament to the brand’s new direction and the positive reception we’ve received.”

It’s not uncommon for magazines at the same publishing house to share images, especially when it comes to printing photos in international editions of magazines. “Traditionally what we do is handpick the images and circle back,” Lanphear tells Fashionista. We were surprised to see these images reused for magazine as big as Maxim, but clearly they thought it was a great shoot, too.
