Modern Family star Sofía Vergara is a CoverGirl well known for her confidence and unabashedly frank remarks about being a Latina woman in Hollywood — but she’d rather not watch herself age onscreen. In Net-a-Porter’s edition of The Edit this week, the actress explains that she gets sad when men called her Señora instead of the diminutive for younger women, Señorita. “Watching myself age on screen is awful! There is nothing more disturbing than watching an episode of Modern Family from the first season, then one from seven years later,” she told The Edit.

Vergara pointed out that in her mother’s era, 40 was considered old age — but at 43 years old, the actress doesn’t agree with the sentiment anymore. “You have to accept that you can look beautiful, but in a different way,” she explained, adding that she has adapted her beauty looks to getting older, such as softening her eye makeup and not wearing pink anymore. “In Colombia, once women hit 40, they automatically cut their hair short,” she added. “I used to think I would do that too, but when it came to it I thought, ‘Why should I f—— cut my hair? It makes you look older!’” She also admitted that her body has changed with age — but tailors have been helpful in the meantime, before she gets breast reduction surgery. “There is so much going on under my dresses that I bleed at the end of award ceremonies. In ten years I think it would be good to have a reduction,” she said, noting that her 32DDD breasts, while giving her a famous physique, also give her back pains. “My whole life, buying a bra was a nightmare,” she told Vanity Fair in April 2015.

In the interview with The Edit, Vergara also touched upon the controversy regarding her stereotypical character, Gloria, on Modern Family. “I’m not afraid of [stereotypes], and they don’t have to be bad, either,” she said. Vergara explained that Gloria is “a really good woman with this hilarious accent, so why criticize her for being a stereotype?” Vergara is reportedly worth $37 million — in a small part from her $325,000 per Modern Family episode earnings, but mostly from her major endorsements and campaigns for Diet Pepsi, Head & Shoulders, CoverGirl, and AT&T. Recently, she filed a lawsuit against a beauty brand for using her image without payment. And if Vergara is perpetuating a stereotype, the joke’s on the critics — she’s controlling her image and laughing all the way to the bank.
