Sofia Vergara Admits Social Media Puts Pressure on Women: 'It's Very Overwhelming'

After launching two perfumes — Sofia and Love — within the past two years, Sofia Vergara has launched her third fragrance, Tempting, this time with the help of Beautycon Media, the giant convention held in L.A. to bring together beauty bloggers, moguls and now, celebrities.

“I thought it was a great opportunity to launch the perfume because all the eyes right now are looking at Beautycon,” Vergara, 44, told PEOPLE at the launch in West Hollywood on Friday. “It’s such an important event. I thought it was perfect. It’s great to see the acceptance and the excitement of the people when a product like this comes out. It’s a good way to measure what’s going to happen with it.”

The Modern Family actress, who says her newest fragrance is about “being sexy and feeling sexy,” opened up about the difficulties of living up to the standards people hold her to.

“I think it’s so hard, not just for me, but for every woman,” she said. “Now with the social media and all the craziness with the Internet … you see how women look everywhere in the world. It’s very overwhelming.”

She added, “It’s like, ‘Oh, I should exercise more. Should I eat less? Should I cook more greens? Should I put more makeup on?’ It’s a lot. My niece Daniella, she’s 22, and I tell her it’s not about competing with anyone; just try to be the best that you can. Try to be the sexiest that you can, the most beautiful as you can.”

As Sofia celebrated turning 44 on Sunday, the actress admitted that though she’s not “happy about getting older,” she’s “accepting” it.

“I just wish health, most importantly my family’s health,” she said of her birthday wish. “[And] to be doing well in Modern Family and my work, for people to still be enjoying the things that I do, and to keep working. I like working and feeling useful.”
